Feathered globetrotters under fire

The idea behind the founding of EuroNatur was to protect Europe’s migratory birds not only in their breeding areas, but also on their migration routes. To this day, the protection of wild birds is one of our most pressing tasks. The topic of bird hunting in the Balkans in particular is proving to be a real hot topic. Every year, around 25 million birds are killed illegally in the Mediterranean region, around two million of them in the Western Balkans. So far, there are only a few resting places here where migratory birds are really safe.

Many years ago, EuroNatur launched a program to protect the wetlands of the eastern Adriatic and the migratory birds that stop here on their long journey between summer and winter quarters. Since then, we have been working intensively with our partners to put a permanent stop to the annual bird mortality and to preserve the habitats of migratory birds across borders.

In the lecture, we will cover the historical bird hunting on Lake Constance (“Belchen Battle”) to the Balkans, where the EuroNatur Foundation has the geographical focus of its projects. The example of Lake Constance is a good illustration of how the cessation of hunting leads to an increase in populations in traditional resting areas – something we also want to achieve in south-eastern Europe.
